Thanks to their potent formulas and unique properties, acids (including AHAs, BHA and PHAs) are an effective way to elevate your skincare ritual. Using the right acids for your skin type can help to tackle skin concerns and result in a brighter, smoother and more even-looking complexion. Read on to discover what AHAs, BHA and PHAs are, their unique attributes, and how to use them for optimal results.

Why Add Acids to Your Skincare Routine

What Do Acids In Skincare Do?

Acids for skin are excellent exfoliators, working to decongest pores and improve texture to leave skin feeling smooth and even. Acids also work to stimulate collagen production, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and support plumper, more youthful-looking skin.

What Are The Different Kinds Of Acids In Skincare?

There are three main categories of acids for skin: AHA, BHA and PHA. Each possesses unique qualities with specific skin benefits.

What Is AHA?

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are naturally occurring chemical compounds often derived from organic sugars.  There are seven AHAs. However, only two are used frequently in skincare: glycolic acid (derived from sugar cane) and lactic acid (derived from milk).

Glycolic and lactic acid act as chemical exfoliants and dissolve the bonds between skin cells, helping to promote the skin’s natural renewal process. This helps to smooth the skin and reduce the appearance of pigmentation, improving overall texture and tone. AHAs also attract water molecules, helping to lock in moisture and reveal radiant, hydrated-feeling skin.

What Is PHA?

Although AHAs have many skincare benefits, they can be irritating by nature and increase sensitivity to sun damage. Those with more sensitive skin often find that poly hydroxy acids (PHAs) are more appropriate for their skin type.

Due to their larger molecule size, PHAs are gentler on the skin and are the only acid in skincare to not increase vulnerability to UV damage. They are still very effective exfoliants, promote hydration and have various anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

The gentler nature and extensive benefits of PHAs make them the perfect acid to incorporate into a sensitive skincare ritual.

What Is BHA?

It’s a common misconception that there are many beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) but there is only one: salicylic acid.

Unlike AHAs and PHAs which are water-soluble, salicylic acid is oil-soluble, meaning that it can penetrate below the surface of the skin and unclog blemish-causing pores.
